Practical Action

Plastics challenge (ages 8-14)

Investigate the properties of plastics and learn how to tell different types of plastic apart. Get an insight into the problems caused by plastic waste globally and the solutions that are making a difference. Then try your hand at recycling by designing and making a new product out of waste plastic.

Floating garden challenge (ages 5-18)

Learn about the difficulty that farmers in Bangladesh and the UK experience when they try to grow crops on regularly flooded land. Can you make a model of a floating structure/garden that farmers could grow their crops on? Testing if the ‘garden’ floats is great fun!

Our interactive, family friendly workshops are based on our range of free STEM, science, design and technology resources. These resources fit the UK schools curriculum and engage children in real world issues including climate change, renewable energy, food security and disaster preparedness.

Looking for further engaging resources that will inspire your children? Our free STEM challenges make ideal activities for primary and secondary aged children. Each challenge is easy to navigate and includes a teacher’s guide to running the challenge, activity sheets, a PowerPoint, a poster and certificates. Visit our website to browse the full collection:

About Practical Action

Practical Action is an international development organisation that puts ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world. We help people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. At Practical Action, we believe in the power of small to change the big picture. And that together we can take practical action to build futures free from poverty.
